Mr Coppinger was born in Canada and attended the University of Western Ontario before studying medicine at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London.
He trained as a general surgeon before specialising in urology. He worked at the Institute of Urology in London and the Middlesex Hospital (now part of UCL) .
This was an exciting time for British urology and he was able to study under many of the leading experts in urology of the day.
